One of my favorite songs of the Yuletide Season has always been “The Twelve Days of Christmas,” a seemingly catchy, quirky, all inviting type of jingle. The twelve days leading up to the splendor that is Christmas, in all its commercialized glory. WRONG. Year after year, various versions of this holiday song have been created causing laughter and merriment. However, little did I know what the original intention of this song actually was. Although I grew up in a Catholic household, I had no knowledge, of which I remember, that the Twelve Days of Christmas actually start on December 25th and last until the Feast of the Epiphany on January 6th.
There is much religious meaning in this song as it was created as a way for children to learn tenants of the Catholic religion during a time when it was outlawed. It is amazing the power of a song, how it can transcend generations, and the importance it holds within a historical period. On the other hand, the many versions of this tune have induced pains of laughter year in and year out.
