Why am I talking about all the different reasons to visit Emilia-Romagna? Well, Mom’s godmother Enes was from the region of Emilia-Romagna. Mom remembers her for her kindness and her tortellini. She made them often. The rings stuffed with cheese and cured meat were sumptuous and exotic for my southern-Italian roots.

The first time that I set foot in Emilia-Romagna was during a scout for the Netflix series Ugly Delicious. The region, nestled in the heart of Italy, is all too often overshadowed by its famous neighbor Tuscany. It offers a rich tapestry of culture, history, and gastronomy that captivates any traveler. From medieval towns to exquisite cuisine and stunning landscapes, the region has something for everyone, but if you need more convincing, here are five reasons to visit Emilia-Romagna:

1. Culinary Delights

Emilia-Romagna is the birthplace of some of Italy’s most iconic ingredients and dishes. They include Parmigiano Reggiano cheese, traditional balsamic vinegar, and beloved pasta dishes like tagliatelle al ragù aka alla Bolognese and tortellini in brodo.

Food lovers delight in discovering the region’s trattorias, osterias, and street markets, where they can indulge in dishes made from fresh, locally sourced ingredients.

2. Art and Architecture

Explore the medieval streets of Bologna, home to the oldest university in the Western world and an array of historic landmarks, including le due torri, the two towers which are a symbol of the city.

Marvel at the mosaics in Ravenna, a UNESCO World Heritage site known for its Byzantine treasures. Don’t miss Parma and a visit to Teatro Farnese. Built from 1616 onwards, it is an incredible example of genius: the stage props were mobile and the theater was equipped with a system for flooding.

3. Wine

Emilia-Romagna boasts a variety of wines that are worth tasting.

Lambrusco is the most well-known wine from the region. No longer the bubble gum wine from the past, the sparkling red wine comes in a range of styles, from dry to sweet. Lively bubbles and refreshing acidity make it the perfect partner for the rich and savory local dishes.

If a red still wine is what you prefer, ask for Sangiovese di Romagna. The medium-bodied red wine exudes flavors of cherry, plum, and spice and pairs well with dishes, from pasta and pizza to grilled meats and aged cheeses.

For a fresh white wine, Pignoletto is a white grape variety native to Emilia-Romagna. It is used in both still and sparkling wines and is crisp and aromatic, with flavors of green apple, pear and floral notes; to me it is perfect for sipping on a hot summer day and pairing with salad, seafood, and fresh cheeses.

4. Festivals and Events

Throughout the year, the region of Emilia-Romagna plays host to a vibrant calendar of events celebrating everything from food and wine to music and art.

Music enthusiasts can book tickets to the annual Verdi Festival. The world–renowned cultural celebration is considered one of the premier opera events in Italy. The event brings together opera lovers in Parma and Busseto, home and birthplace of Giuseppe Verdi.

Plan to attend a food event like la Sagra del Tartufo a Sant’Agata Feltria (white truffle event in Sant’Agata Feltria). Whatever your interests, there is something to do in Emilia-Romagna.

5. Warm Hospitality

The warm and welcoming hospitality of the people here should not be overlooked when thinking about the reasons to visit Emilia-Romagna.

Whether you stay in a family-run B&B, dine in a cozy trattoria, or simply explore the streets of a small town, you are sure to be greeted with genuine friendliness wherever you go. Residents take pride in sharing their culture, traditions, and cuisine with tourists, making a stay in Emilia-Romagna an unforgettable experience.
