The pandemic brought unimaginable damage to the restaurant business everywhere around the world. The effort and resilience of restaurateurs this past year has been truly admirable. Let’s show them some love! We’re very excited to see things now slowly going back to normal.
“Is August a good time to visit Rome?” This is probably the question we get asked the most (after, “What’s the difference between gelato and ice cream?”). The former question is legitimate since many guide books for the past decade have been spreading false truths about the city being a desolate wasteland, I am legend-style.
The Eternal City awaits!

While it’s true that many locals do take their vacation in August and many places close, it’s equally true that the trend has been shifting. In recent years, an increasing number of businesses, including restaurants, stays open for part or all of August. It’s increasingly easier to find great places to eat in Rome for the entire month of August, and even on the proverbial peak of August closures, Ferragosto––August 15.
Every year we like to update our list of August closures. We’re happy to report that many favorite places in Rome that normally close in August will be open after this disastrous year of loss. Let’s help the restaurant business get back on its feet!
Here is a selection of our favorite places in the eternal city, with August openings and closures. Our advice is to always double-check with the management, and make reservations ahead of time.
