Testaccio Market

A privately guided food tour of Rome’s Testaccio market and neighborhood.

In the shadow of the Mattatoio, Rome’s ex-slaughterhouse–which now houses contemporary art exhibitions–food lovers are guided through the heart of working class and food-centric Testaccio by local food experts who focus on showcasing only small, family-run food artisans, and who love creating friendly connections between travelers and locals.

This walking food adventure offers the chance to experience the Nuovo Mercato di Testaccio, one of the city’s most versatile neighborhood markets, sitting above the well-preserved remains of a market warehouse dating back to the 1st century.

Relatively untouched by mass tourism, visiting the Testaccio farmer’s market, and surrounding specialty shops, offers cultural insight into the local food scene.

We encourage talking to the friendly and trusted vendors; and experience the local cucina romana by observing (and tasting!) the work and products of local fishmongers, butchers, farm-to-market organic produce sellers, street food kiosk owners, cured meat and cheese vendors, bakers and pasta makers.

Between tastings and photos, we discuss the meaning of eating seasonally and how local recipes and cucina povera are crucially connected to market-fresh produce and traditions.

We enjoyed a wonderful tour of Rome. We visited a neighborhood food market and several local food merchants, including a bakery, a pizza place, and a cheese store. Our guide was very knowledgeable about food, history, and traditions. Highly recommended!
