It seems as though everybody and their mother (father, and entire extended family) are headed to Italy this summer, and asking about how it’s possible to keep your cool while here.

For such a gorgeous country, studded in history, culture, and cuisine, Italy can be scorching during the summer months. Do not let this discourage you if you are en route to the airport however, because even though the heat is on, you can stay cool and enjoy your trip to the fullest with a little foresight and awareness.

Here are our top tips on how to keep your cool when traveling to Italy this summer:

1. It’s all about the drip – clothing, not sweat

  • Choose loose-fitting, lightweight clothing made from natural fibers like cotton or linen
  • Avoid synthetic fabrics that trap heat and only make you sweat more
  • Wear light-colored clothing, as dark colors absorb more heat
  • If you plan to visit religious sites, ensure your clothing covers your shoulders and knees
  • Do wear layers, as air conditioning is around

2. Hydration Station

  • Avoid sugary drinks like soda and juice, as they can dehydrate you
  • Carry a refillable water bottle with you and fill it up regularly at fountains or cafes
  • Consider using electrolyte drinks to replenish minerals lost through sweating

3. Keep it light – if you can

  • Avoid heavy, greasy meals, as they can make you feel sluggish and overheated
  • Eat seasonally, with plenty of fruit
  • Focus on dishes that allow you to add fresh herbs like basil, mint, and oregano into your meals for their cooling properties
  • Gelato, gelato, gelato… and/or sorbet and/or granita – taste the coolness

4. Don’t be a hero

  • If you’re feeling overheated, don’t push yourself
  • Take a break in a cool place, such as a café, museum, or hotel room
  • Relax, hydrate, and cool down before continuing your exploration
  • Part of being in Italy, is living as an Italian – relax

5. Stay shady

  • If you are out touring, go in the morning or in the evening – stay out of the midday sun
  • If you are out and about after midday – look for parks, piazzas with trees, or covered walkways
  • Use an umbrella or parasol to protect yourself from the sun
  • Get yourself a hat – a nice wide-brimmed hat for protection – this is one of my faves!
  • And sunscreen – sunscreen is a must-have to shade your skin from powerful and harmful rays
