I’m always amazed how much the Sicilian dialect reflects the Neapolitan dialect that my parents spoke. ‘Nzalata! Exactly how they said it.
And yet when I’m in Sorrento or thereabouts I can’t understand a word they say. It puzzles me a bit.
I wish I could be there but I’m in AZ and you aren’t. Although Tucson has just been named by UNESCO as the first city of Gastronomy. Come visit and see!

Roseann – we hope that we’ll have a chance to visit AZ soon! I found the same with my grandparents from Salerno. The dialect was similar to some Sicilian dialect. I wonder if their dialect changed in the U.S. as they spoke with Italian immigrants from different regions.
