LANGHE

The Vineyard Landscape of Piemonte: Langhe-Roero and Monferrato is a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2014. It covers five distinct wine-growing areas with outstanding landscapes located in the southern part of Piemonte, between the Po River and the Liguria Apennine Mountains. Langhe encompasses the whole range of technical and economic processes relating to winegrowing and winemaking that have characterized the region for centuries. Vine pollen was found in Langhe, dating back to the 5th century BC, a time when Piemonte was a place of trade between the Etruscans and the Celts. As a matter of fact, Etruscan and Celtic words, particularly wine-related terms, are still found in the local dialect. During the Roman Empire, Pliny the Elder mentioned Langhe as being one of the most favorable for growing grapes.

Here are some places to stay in Langhe, listed alphabetically.

monferrato wine country piemonte

MONFERRATO

UNESCO World Heritage vine-growing area Monferrato is a territory located between the provinces of Asti and Alessandria, between the river Po and the Liguria Apennine Mountains. The area is well known for the production of Barbera and Asti Spumante. All over the world, this land is known for its red wines, especially its sparkling wines. The dry climate with hot summers tending and exceptionally cold winters and the particular hydro-geological soil composition are favorable to wine-growing. This is dominant throughout the territory, making wine not only an element of economic wealth for the entire region but also, above all, a true symbol of Monferrato culture and tradition. Proof of this is the widespread distribution of native grape varieties and, consequently, a wide variety of wines.

Here are some places to stay in Monferrato, listed alphabetically.

cathedrals of wine canelli, piemonte

Relais Villa del Borgo

The city of Canelli and its esteemed Asti Spumante have been linked to grapes and wine since Roman times. Testament to this are the famous underground “wine cathedrals”: miles of tunnels dug beneath the tufa hills of Canelli between the 16th and 19th centuries. The tunnels’ perfect temperature with constant humidity provides the ideal climate for aging the fine sparkling wines. Immersed in the historical heart of Canelli, Villa del Borgo stands proudly, having risen from an ancient religious residence founded between the 18th and 19th centuries. The Relais overlooks the Roman cobblestone path, the Sternia, which leads explorers to the enigmatic ‘underground cathedrals’ and the famous Gancia Castle. Within the confines of the hotel is the Baroque-style Church of San Rocco, which now serves as a dynamic space for events, exhibitions and displays. Walking through our corridors and suites, hints of the monastic life led by the monks of St Augustine in times gone by are palpable.
